Description
The Storytelling Librarian connects the community to its roots and makes local history accessible, meaningful, and memorable through storytelling in a variety of formats. Under the direct supervision of the Research and Digital Creation Manager and with an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Storytelling Librarian will:
Conduct in-depth research on local history, notable figures, events, and family histories to gather accurate and compelling stories. Collaborate with historians, local archives and museums, and community members to ensure authenticity and enrich the content.Develop engaging narratives based on historical records, oral histories, photographs, and other resources. Curate a blend of traditional storytelling formats and digital content (for example, videos, podcasts, graphics) to capture different aspects of the community's history.
Develop and curate interactive exhibits that showcase local history, family heritage, and community stories within the library’s space. Collaborate with local artists, historians, and community groups to ensure exhibits are visually engaging and culturally representative.
Design and deliver programming (for example story hours, workshops, lectures) for various age groups, incorporating local history and family stories.
Provide hands-on reference service to patrons and organizations for local history and genealogy topics using pertinent reference materials and electronic resources.
Perform preservation and archiving for physical materials of local interest.
Participate in collection development for local history and genealogy materials.
Assist with implementation of SJCPL’s digitization efforts. Index and provide metadata for digital objects.
Responsible for the supervision of department volunteers.
Monitor trends in local history and genealogy. Make recommendations for service changes to optimize the users’ experience. Responsible for systemwide staff training for local history and genealogy topics.
Actively participate in community projects and outreach. Take part in library initiatives, projects, and teams, as well as professional organizations and conference attendance.
Education and Experience:
- ALA (American Library Association) accredited MLS (Master’s of Library Science degree).
- At least two years work experience in library special collections, museums, or archives, including experience with interactive and creative presentation of information.
- A valid State of Indiana Librarian Certification, Level 3 obtained within three years of hire as a condition of employment.
Hours:
- Full time, 40 hour workweek.
- Evening and weekend work is required.
Requirements:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills.
- Public service orientation and commitment to excellent and genuine customer service.
- Demonstration of character and integrity in all situations while upholding SJCPL’s ethical standards.
- Practical experience and proficiency with computers, including the Internet, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, digitization software and hardware, Windows, Mac OS, and communication technologies.
- Knowledge of a wide variety of library materials and services appropriate for a variety of patrons.
- Physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift, and move library materials (20-25 lbs.) and to stand for long periods of time.
- Knowledge of and interest in genealogy and local history resources.
- Clear and thorough understanding of preservation and digitization procedures and best practices.
- Comfortable with public speaking.
- Advanced knowledge and demonstrated use of graphic design software.
- Spanish language skills preferred.
